Kuku Bora – Empowering Communities Through Poultry
The Kuku Bora Project by the Jeff Okanya Foundation was launched in 2023 as a flagship initiative to fight poverty, enhance food security, and empower communities in Matayos Constituency. The journey began in Busibwabo Ward, where the first group of farmers received training, chicks, and support to establish poultry enterprises. Following its success, the project quickly spread to Matayos South and Mayenje Wards, touching more lives and building stronger, self-reliant communities. To date, over 100 groups—the majority being women and youth—have benefited from Kuku Bora. The project has provided opportunities for families to generate sustainable income, improve nutrition, and reinvest in their future. One inspiring story is that of the Matayos Brothers, who started with Kuku Bora chicks, successfully reared and sold their chickens, and went on to purchase a commercial plot in Matayos town. Their success is a powerful testimony of how small beginnings, with the right support, can transform lives. A key feature of Kuku Bora is its sustainability model. The Jeff Okanya Foundation has invested in incubators placed within the wards, ensuring a steady supply of chicks for farmers without dependence on external suppliers. This community-based model guarantees continuity, affordability, and scalability of the project. Through Kuku Bora, the Jeff Okanya Foundation is not just distributing chicks—it is nurturing dreams, creating livelihoods, and building a future of self-reliance for the people of Busia County and beyond.
